WHATEVER
EQ
IS,
YOU CAN LEARN IT!
Emotional intelligence can be
learned, and can be learned over our entire lifetimes. It is best
learned through a combination of reading, studying, coaching, and by
putting the skills into practice on a daily basis.
To increase your EQ skills,
take the EQ Course, sign up for some
coaching, and work on one new skill at a time. Taking an
assessment will help you pinpoint which emotional intelligence competencies you want to focus
on.
The EQ
Mini-Courses will give you tips on how to improve a specific EQ
competency one-day-at-a-time.

Goleman's
latest, "Primal Leadership"
EQ Q&A:
Q: Do you think emotions belong in the workplace?
A: It doesn't matter, they're there.
"Business leaders who
maintain that emotions are best kept out of the work environment do so at
their organization's peril," says Goleman. In this book, he and his
coauthors present
the case for cultivating emotionally intelligent leaders.
Since the actions of the
leader apparently account for up to 70% of employees' perception of the
climate of their organization, Goleman and his team emphasize the
importance of developing what they call "resonant
leadership."

EQ IN THE WORK PLACE
Want to raise the bottom
line? Want to retain your best employees? Bring in the EQ!
It's been a long time
coming, to even TALK about emotions in the work place. But here we
are, thank heavens. I purposely keep this website more
"homey" than "professional," because I don't leave
"me" at home when I "go to work." DO
YOU?
I work a lot with Buckingham
and Clifton's Strengths, and when I printed their list of things
you should be able to answer "yes" to at work, one of them
is: Do you have a best friend at work?
I got lots of [e]cards and [e]letters
about that one, folks. Does it help you work better to have a
best friend at work? Let me know what you think.
The
EMOTIONAL TONE at work is CRUCIAL to the employees' productivity.

FOR YOUR HEALTH
"A recent Institute
research study published in the Journal of Advancement of Medicine
shows that even a 5 minute episode of recalling an angry experience can
suppress the immune system for as much as 6 hours. The converse is
also true. Attitudes like appreciation, care, and compassion
significantly boost immune system strength. The more our system is
balanced, the more intuitive insight we're capable of.--intuition that
can anticipate problems before they turn ugly."

RESEARCH
What the researches were after is that
quality we all recognize as " a good personality," or
"easy to work with," or "common sense," or "the
ability to makes things go well." People who've just got a
good thing going on. Their lives seem to work.
Research broke this "way of
being" down into behaviors and gave them names. This made it
all more comprehensible, and also, then, it could be taught!
And they gave it a name:
"emotional intelligence."
Different schools use different
terminology, but here are some of them:
- Resilience
- Optimism
- Compassion
- Empathy
- Flexibility
- Fluency
- Creativity
- Outlook
- Interpersonal skills
- Intrapersonal skills
- Emotional expressive
- Reading others' emotions
Self-awareness is the cornerstone of
emotional intelligence. Without it there can be no emotional
intelligence.
Optimism is the facilitator of
emotional intelligence. Like the yeast in the bread, or the grease
on the machine, it makes the other things happen.
These can roughly be grouped into
- Self-mastery skills (self-control,
initiative)
- Relationship skills (developing other,
conflict management, bonding)
And then, EQ went into the
work world!
