MOST
DESIRED TRAITS ARE EQ-RELATED
A recent
survey of American employees reveals the following about
entry-level hires: Of seven desired traits, six
involve social competencies--only one is academic in
nature. Oral communication, interpersonal skills and
teamwork abilities are the most highly sought-after
skills. EQ Trait: Interpersonal Skills
WE WANT
ETHICS
An
Ethics Resource Center study found that 90% of employees
value leaders with integrity as highly as they value
income. EQ trait: Authenticity, Values, Ethics
ANGER
COSTS A
recent Institute research study published in the Journal
of Advancement of Medicine shows that even a 5 minute
episode of recalling an angry experience can suppress the
immune system for as much as 6 hours. The converse
is also true. Attitudes like appreciation, care,
gratitude, and
compassion significantly boost immune system strength.
The more our system is balanced, the more intuitive
insight we're capable of.--intuition that can anticipate
problems before they turn ugly." ["Neutralizing Workplace Stress," by Bruce Cryer]
EQ Trait: Anger Management, Constructive Discontent
OPTIMISM
RULES
How people respond
to setbacks - optimistically or pessimistically - is a
fairly accurate indicator of how well they will succeed in
school, in sports and in certain kinds of work. People
with an optimistic view of life tend to treat obstacles
and setbacks as temporary and therefore surmountable.
Pessimists take them personally; what others see as
fleeting, localized impediments, they view as pervasive
and permanent." – Time Magazine EQ
trait: Optimism, Resilience
TRUST YOUR
GUTS/INTUITION IS "IN"
"Intuition"
is one of those good words that has gotten a bad rap. For
some reason, intuition has become a "soft"
notion. Garbage! Intuition is the new physics. It's an
Einsteinian, seven-sense, practical way to make tough
decisions. Bottom line, circa 2001 to 2010: The crazier
the times are, the more important it is for leaders to
develop and to trust their intuition. – Tom Peters, FAST
COMPANY EQ trait: Intuition, 'Gut Feeling'
FORGIVE
YOUR MISTAKES
Leaders
make mistakes, and make no bones about it. Nobody
-- repeat, nobody -- gets it right the first time. Most of
us don't get it right the second, third, or fourth time
either. Winston Churchill said it best: "Success is
the ability to go from failure to failure without losing
your enthusiasm." Churchill blew one assignment after
another -- until he came up against the big one and saved
the world.
Tom Peters, FAST COMPANY
EQ Trait: Being adamantly
and relentlessly self-forgiving
SHOW YOUR
EMOTIONS
Leaders
wear their passion on their sleeve. There's
absolutely no question in my mind: Leaders dream in
Technicolor. They see the world in brighter colors,
sharper images, and higher resolution. Leadership, in the
end, is all about having energy, creating energy, showing
energy, and spreading energy. Leaders emote, they erupt,
they flame, and they have boundless (nutty) enthusiasm.
And why shouldn't they? The cold logic of it is
unassailable: If you do not love what you're doing, if you
do not go totally bonkers for your project, your team,
your customers, and your company, then why in the world
are you doing what you're doing? And why in the world
would you expect anybody to follow you?

Emotional Management!
BE
"SOFT", SHOW YOU CARE Leaders
show they care. Hatim Tyabji, who was at one time the
soft-spoken, charismatic CEO of Verifone, once traveled
from South Africa to Colorado -- on his way to Norway --
to give a one-hour presentation at a conference of just 30
people. Why? Because three months prior to that
engagement, before all of the other trips had even been
booked, he had promised to be there. I guarantee that
people paid uncompromising attention to his one-hour talk,
because he showed uncompromising
leadership by showing up. --Mark
McCormack, sports agent EQ Trait:
Interpersonal Skills
FOCUS ON
THE "SOFT" STUFF FOR "HARD" RESULTS
Focus
on the soft stuff -- People. Values. Character.
Commitment. A cause. All of the stuff that was supposed to
be too goo-goo to count in business. Yet, it's the stuff
that real leaders take care of first. And forever. That's
why leadership is an art, not a science.
If
leadership were just about hitting your numbers, about
driving the troops to meet their quotas, then
leadership would just be a math problem. But leadership is
a human mystery. --Tom Peters, FAST
COMPANY EQ Skills: Solving the human
mystery. :)
MAKE
MEANING -- LEAD!
Leaders
make meaning. John
Seely Brown, the former head of ceaselessly innovative
Xerox PARC, nailed it, especially for these totally insane
times: "A leader's job isn't just to make decisions
and to make products or services. A leader's job is also
to make meaning." Why? Because in times like these,
people depend on their leaders to absorb all of the chaos,
all of the information, all of the change, and to find
some meaningful pattern and compelling purpose in the
midst of all of the splatter. --Tom Peters, FAST
