Prof. Robert Greenberg, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, says it's important to note than music doesn't build on the previous in the way science does.  It doesn't become better just different .  Beethoven is not better than Haydn, or Puccini better than Verdi.  Except, he adds, in the case of Mozart.  There's no one better than Mozart.  Whoa, there Chester.  Are you going to let him get away with that?  LET US HEAR FROM YOU.
